Profile
and Biography of Prof. Ir. R.M. Sedyatmo. He was born in Karanganyar, Central
Java in 1909 he was an Indonesian engineer. Sedyatmo, often nicknamed "The
Kancil" because it is known for its many reasons to study at the
TechnischeHogescholl (THS) (now ITB) Bandung. Completed from THS in 1934,
Sedyatmo worked as a planning engineer in various government agencies. Sedyatmo
was known as the inventor of the "Foundation of Chicken Claws" in
1962. The findings of Sedyatmo were initially used in the manufacture of the
Juanda Naval Air Station apron, Surabaya, the runway of Polonia airport, Medan,
and the runway at Soekarno-Hatta airport, Jakarta. The findings have been patented
and used abroad.
The
foundation of chicken claw consists of reinforced concrete plates with a
thickness of 10-15 cm, depending on the type of construction and the condition
of the soil below. Under the concrete plate, a pipe is made with a spacing
between 2-3 m. The pipe diameter is 1.20 m, 8 cm thick, and the length depends
on the load on the plate and the condition of the soil. For a pipe, a single
reinforcement is used, while for a double reinforcement plate
The
chicken claw pond system is very simple, so it is well suited to be applied in
areas where modern equipment and experts are difficult to obtain. To a certain
extent, this system can replace the pile foundation. For 3-4 storey buildings,
for example, the chicken claw system will cost the same as a 12 meter pile
foundation.
However, Sedyatmo is not a scientist who is thirsty for appreciation. Humility and high dedication to the nation became the spirit of his creation. And unique, Sedyatmo always emphasizes the importance of intuition and observation of the universe. The work of the chicken claws is proof of how his creation was inspired by the roots of coconut trees.
Other
well-known Sedyatmo works are hydraulic pumps, Jatiluhur dam, and even the
Suramadu bridge built based on the initial concept of Sedyatmo. Not
surprisingly, his outstanding contribution to technical knowledge, named
Sedyatmo won a number of international awards.
The
name Sedyatmo was later enshrined as the name of the expressway from Jakarta to
the Soekarno-Hatta airport. Professor Sedyatmo died at the age of 75 in 1984
and was buried in Karanganyar. The Indonesian government awarded
